I know a lot of people say it feels like there are a thousand days in January, but I am finding February even longer. I’m a bit bored and fed up with it. I need a boost.

The gloominess plus the endless cold I’ve developed are not helping.  I’m personally keeping Kleenex in business at the moment.

Although I write this when the weather is downright miserable and winter seems to endless, there are plenty of other times where I’ve seen my mood dip. And, in fact, midlife often comes with some lows, and, as a result, some times where a boost is needed.

Rather than continuing to feel fed up and flat, last week I decided to take action. Nothing too major.  Some simple things that made me feel a whole lot better, but things that might also provide some inspiration too, if you’re feeling the same.

01

Running – I hadn’t run for over a week (I know for non-runners this might seem like a short time but for me it almost feels like an eternity). It’s not exactly advisable to run with a chesty cough, it had almost gone,  I weighed up the risks/benefits and put my trainers on. I felt 100% better after getting out, resulting in some running induced endorphins. Walking, Dancing, lifting weights – whatever you enjoy most –  movement will always give you a boost!

02

Contrast Therapy – I went on a trip to an outdoor sauna with friends. I just love the instant endorphin and adrenaline boost of dipping in and out of hot and cold. It’s so exhilarating and makes me feel energised afterwards. And also I find I sleep so much better afterwards too – bonus.  (Top tip – although I’m not so good at this – turn the shower to cold for 30secs to get a similar effect.)

03

Making progress with something I’ve been avoiding – I won’t bore you with the details but I’ve had some life admin (mostly finance) stuff hanging around in the back of my head, on my to-do list and constantly being buried by other ‘priorities’ – but this week I bit the bullet. Did the things I needed to do. And guess what – I felt the benefits! Another boost

04

Planning fun – this is one of the best boosts I know. I’ve so many lovely things lined up this year — travel, small treats, and a special birthday celebration that’s technically “not a party”… but absolutely is. It needs a little planning, so I’ve arranged a proper plan-the-plans session with friends. Something joyful to look forward to in the next few weeks — and a way to let the excitement build slowly.

05

Being creative – I love making things, dreaming of the things I might make. I need a sort of special outfit soon (see above!). I’m going to take the challenge on to create the outfit. My mind is buzzing with an idea and  how I’ll execute my vision – exciting! Its boosting.

So in the space of a few days. I’ve given myself a boost. And will draw upon these things when I need a future boost.

In March I will absolutely continue. I’m taking on the Boost30 challenge for Menopause and Cancer. A 30-day wellbeing challenge to build focus, improve health and raise awareness for menopause after cancer.
